Many families have it as part of their culture to do big meetings and festivities over the holidays. Isn’t it great, how a person’s culture and sense of being and belonging can make them put all differences aside and come together? Truly, good or bad, family should be cherished and its cultural heritage should never be lost. And, who says cultures only bring together families? One of the best parts of holiday affairs is getting to spend time with friends, both old and new.

As it’s said “friends are the family we choose”, most of the time the closest friends are the ones who are so different they bring new adventures and excitement into your life. For those who travel, friends are found in every corner of the globe. And, truth is, the more culturally diverse the better. Mankind is full of curiosity for the unknown, where a new friend with a new language and a completely different culture draws so much attention. Friendships bring together people who carry their traditions, or want to be incorporated in new ones. The same goes for strangers.

When someone moves to a new country or even city it’s easy to feel like an outsider, but doesn’t that quickly change once a familiar language and customs is heard and seen? Just as culture draws families together, language unites strangers. It not only breaks barriers, but creates opportunities, promotes growth and integration. And, who knows if the next holidays will be shared with that person who had that one tiny but magnificent thing in common.

Alas, this holiday season enjoy with loved ones and always remember the importance and uniting power brought through languages, cultures and most significantly diversity.

About the Author:

Jessie is a linguist and creative writer from Puerto Rico, who draws inspiration from her rich and lively Caribbean culture.
