Similar to exercising your muscles, it’s good to stimulate pathways in your brain regularly to heighten your cognitive abilities. In the long run, being multilingual improves cognitive performance so much that it can help fight off mental diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, and it can even delay the on-set of dementia by five years (as stated in a TEDxtalk by Mia Nacamulli and a BBC article by David Robson). All in all, multilingualism has been proven to be cognitively beneficial, soundly disproving the long-held belief that multilingualism hinders cognitive development.

Work Cited:

Marian, Viorica. “The Cognitive Benefits of Being Bilingual.” Cerebrum. 2012.
