It just so happens that, because English is the lingua franca of the world, English-speaking countries tend to have higher levels of monolingualism because most of the world already speaks their language. It is only with the recent increase in globalization that English-speaking countries have started to focus more on learning other languages. That\u2019s why many Americans might have grown up not knowing other people who spoke more than one language. English has been the language of business for a while, but it is not the most commonly spoken language in the world, nor is it the only language used in business any longer.
