Smart Coos made a request for parents to share activities they use to keep their families fit. Maurice Williams, owner of Move Well Fitness in Bethesda, MD, stepped up to the plate to share some of his pointers:

Working Out With Your Kids

In today’s society, families are spending less and less time together. Parents are working more and kids are spending more time outside of the house more than ever before. It is truly sad times for the family structure.  However, there are some things that can be done to get our families back to the way they use to be. One of the ways this can be done is through family exercise! Here are a few things that my family does to incorporate exercise together as a family:

Saturday afternoon Walks and Biking

When the weather allows us, we like to go for family walks. My wife and I do the walking and push our youngest in a stroller.  Our two older kids, ages 8 and 9, do the biking. Our kids love this because they love spending time outside with their family riding their bikes.

Push-Up Competitions

As a fitness professional and one who is competitive, I like to challenge my family to push-ups. Well I don’t compete, that would be unfair! My wife and kids compete against each other. My 8-year daughter is the reigning champion. We typically do as many pushups as possible in two rounds.

Fitness DVD’s

Between my wife and I, we have enough exercise DVD’s to last us for a lifetime. As a result, our kids have watched us do them. Now, they like to pop them in themselves and start working out. It is amazing to see how much energy they have at their young age and how they can keep up with the DVDs.

Playing Outside

This is probably the most popular thing that we parents do with our kids. From freeze tag, to two-hand touch, to hide and go seek, my family has done it all. We even play the chase game where my kids get a head start running or on their bike and then we have to try to catch them.

Real Workout Sessions

Because I’m a fitness professional, my kids have grown up with exercise. As a result, they like to have me take them through real exercises that I do with my clients. I usually keep it simple with them and do exercises such as planks, push-ups, squats, bridges, jumping jacks and TRX rows.

Conclusion

Families that exercise together, stay together. With the demands of today’s busy schedule for everyone, let us make time to spend together as a family exercising!
