Parents are often worried if their infant is on track when it comes to acquiring and developing a language. It’s a valid concern – certain language delays are indicative of larger problems. However, it’s important to remember that every baby learns differently and at a different pace. Outlined below is a tentative timeline that highlights the language milestones of the average infant and toddler, along with some tips and tricks to make acquiring language a bit easier for both you and your baby. These milestones should not be used to diagnose your child with any speech or language disorders. Please contact your child’s doctor with any questions regarding your child’s development
1-2 years
- Knows the names of a few body parts
- Recognizes and points to pictures in books
- Follows simple commands
- Says two-word phrases or questions
- Understands two commands in a row
- Draws your attention to something by naming it
2-3 years
- Names objects in order to receive them
- Says two-word and three-word phrases and questions
- Uses words to describe almost everything
3-4 years
- Can answer simple questions
- Says sentences with four or more words
- Speaks with an easy flow, without repetition of syllables
- Tells stories about events that occur outside of home
- Speaks in an understandable manner
4-5 years
- Can answer questions about short stories
- Says detailed, complex sentences
- Says stories
- Uses advanced grammar
5-8 years
- Defines common objects
- Follows three commands given in a row
- Sees relationships between words, objects, and events
- Begins to do simple reading and writing
Language acquisition requires repetition and it requires a lot of fun!
Constantly engage in conversation and wait for babbling responses, first words, and first sentences. Use books and music to attract their attention. Pay attention to what interests your baby and make that the topic of songs and conversations. Reward your baby with smiles, laughter, and applause! Engage with your child! Be enthusiastic, be silly, and be patient!
